Mind The Gap #W19
European Tech & VC weekly signal over noise. News, deals, funds, & exits.
📅 May 04 – 10, 2026 | Read time: 5 mins
Quantum & Defense week. Four quantum computing rounds landed in the same seven days, which is either a coincidence or a signal that European deep tech investors have made their bets on where the next compute paradigm starts. Helsing moving toward an $18B valuation is the other number worth sitting with. Defence AI is no longer a niche category. It is becoming one of the most generously priced sectors in European private markets, and the institutional conviction behind it is accelerating.
📰 News of the Week
Helsing set for $18B valuation in new funding round
The German AI defence company is reportedly raising at approximately $18B, placing it among Europe’s most valuable private tech companies. The institutional repricing of AI-driven defence assets shows no sign of slowing.
ICEYE targets €250M raise at €2.4B+ valuation
The Finnish satellite imaging company is in talks to raise €250M according to Bloomberg, with defence contracts pushing its valuation above €2.4B. Another data point on how dual-use and space infrastructure are being repriced in 2026.
SAP acquires Prior Labs for €1B+ commitment
SAP signed a definitive agreement to acquire Freiburg-based Prior Labs, the pioneer of Tabular Foundation Models, and committed more than €1B over four years to scale it into a European frontier AI lab. Prior Labs retains its brand, team, and open-source commitments.
Doctolib acquires Medicus Health and commits £100M+ to the UK market

🔍 My Personal Favorite
Moonlight AI | HealthTech / AI Diagnostics | Seed | €2.8M
Moonlight AI targets a specific bottleneck in oncology: extracting genomic biomarker information from standard blood and cytology slides, a modality that is widespread and low-cost but conventionally unable to yield molecular-level insight without separate genetic assays. The approach applies AI image analysis to existing imaging workflows to infer genomic features, positioning it as a non-destructive overlay on current lab practice rather than a replacement modality. This matters technically because it reduces dependency on expensive next-generation sequencing or immunohistochemistry panels for initial biomarker screening, compressing both time-to-result and cost per patient. The syndicate includes MEDIN Fund and VP Venture Partners, investors with sector-specific diligence capacity. The visual-to-genomic inference layer in cancer diagnostics is structurally underserved, and the approach has defensible IP potential if training data and model architecture remain proprietary.
